Commonwealth Medical Fellowship

Commonwealth Medical Fellowships are offered for dentists and doctors from developing countries to enable them to spend three and six months at UK hospital undertaking a programme to enhance their clinical skills. These fellowships are funded by the Department For International Development(DFID).

Purpose and tenure

The primary aims of the Enhancing Clinical Skills Awards are for the award holder to learn a new clinical skill, to practise the new clinical skill, and to network with others in the same and related specialties.  The secondary aims are for the award holder to participate in the academic activities of the host organisation, and to conduct small-scale research projects.
Awards are tenable for between three months and six months; experience suggests that a minimum of 4 months is sensible.  Awards are tenable at any approved UK University Hospital.

Nominations

Nominations for Commonwealth Medical Fellowships are invited from specific developing country universities. These universities are responsible for advertising the fellowships to their staff and selecting candidates to be nominated to the CSC.

How to apply

All applications must be made through a nominating university in your home country. You must check with them in the first instance for specific advice on how to make an application and for their own closing date.
All Commonwealth Medical Fellowship candidates must submit their application form using our Electronic Application System (EAS).
Full help on how to apply using the EAS is provided in our guides, which should be read in full before making any attempt to use the EAS.
The EAS will close to all applicants on 3 December 2014 and no further applications can be submitted after that date.
